Hey Starbucks, where did all the chai tea go?

Peppermint Moca Latte by Ashley D.

Peppermint Moca Latte by Ashley D.

You may or may not have noticed but nearly every Starbucks in Toronto seems to have run out of chai tea.  What?! No more chai tea lattes?  I’m not quite sure why this is.  I’ve asked a few baristas and most of them shrug and say they don’t know when they’re going to be getting more.  Finally, today, a barista told me that he’s heard head office is going to relaunch a bunch of their teas as “open leaf”.  I have no idea what this means and neither did he..  One would assume that by “open leaf” they mean they’re just going to sell you tea leaves and let you use a tea infuser to make it.  This sort of makes little sense with chai tea considering it’s mostly just spices and contains no leaves (if you may remember from my chai gingerbread cookies).  Plus, I don’t see this option being feasible for people who grab their teas to go.  If I find out more about this chai tea shortage, I’ll be sure to post it here.

In other news, I finally tried out the egg nog latte.  Can’t say I was impressed.  My tongue didn’t seem too thrilled with the crossing of the bitter espresso and sweet mint-like eggnog.  Next on the list to try, the gingerbread latte!
